Mudstone

Mudstone is the finest grained clastic sedimentary rock.

It mainly contains clay sized particles - too small to see without a microscope.

It contains clay minerals as well as quartz, mica and feldspar.

Carbonates and iron oxides are sometimes present.

It is most often dark grey or black in colour.

It can form very thick deposits and it can contain fossils.

It forms in some different environments such as seas, oceans and lakes.

It is in many ways similar to shale - their colour, range, and mineral content are similar, however it is not laminated and does not break in the way that shale does.
